Mosques ... and lower Manhattan
I have resisted blogging on this subject for quite a while. One side of me (the lawyer side) thinks that if they buy the land and air-rights, they can do what the hell they like .... And "hell" seems to feature in this.
Like the hell created one morning in September 2001when 19 Muslims carried out a meticulously planned terrorist attack on the United States ... in the name of Allah the Merciful. An attack the condemnation of which was almost non-existent in the Muslim world. The only apologists seemed to be Liberals and left wingers ... our fault, we had it coming, the chickens coming home to roost (provided by our President's pastor). Sane people recognized it for what it was: a brutal attack, murder in the timeless tradition of the Prophet (who supposedly beheaded 700 Jews in one night).
We Americans are too weak to call this for what it is: the mounting of a trophy on the mantelpiece of Islam. Muslims have long erected mosques on sites of particular historical importance ... sites of battles, victories and to remember. Saudi Arabia, the site of Mecca, regards itself as the guardian of Islam and because it is well heeled thanks to oil revenues, Saudis regard the advance of Islam a holy duty. 15 of the 19 9/11 attackers were Saudis. Saudis fund mosques and madrassas (islamic schools) around the globe, teaching their brand of fundamental "pure" Islam. Find a Pakistani madrassa, and you can follow the bouncing petro-dollar back to Riyahd.
Saudis are also the bankers for terrorism conducted in Islam's name and the deep pocket for the world-wide spread of activism ... however it appears. They live in a permanent state of revenge seeking, wanting to restore of the glories of the Caliphates, greater Islam. Central to this notion is that lands once conquered by Islam are by rights lands of the followers of the Prophet: that means that Spain and most of France is, in Wahabbi thought, unlawfully occupied by infidels. There is a mosque called formally the Ibrahim al Ibrahim mosque or King Fahd bin Abdulazziz Al Saud (after the gent who bought the land and commissioned its construction, the King of Saudi Arabia) mosque. This mosque sits on the furthest southern tip of Gibraltar. On the face of it -- nice gift to the Muslims of Gibraltar. The "other" name of the mosque not used by correct media is Al Rasul .... the return.
About the year 711, a Muslim Berber commander named Tariq bin Zayid landed at the tip of Europa point, establishing a base on the peninsula for his advance into Spain. Gibraltar come from Jebel al Tariq -- Tariq's mountain. During the Ummayad dynasty in Cordoba (the recognized high point of Islamic power and culture -- and a name associated with the atrocity to be built in New York), Gib was fortified. The mosque commemorates Islam's conquest of the Iberian peninsular -- closest point to Islamic North Africa.
A central tenet of Islamic thought is one of superiority, the one true religion, its adherents the only ones that count. In that way, only the view of the world from the Islamic stand point counts. They simply don't care what we think: they accept the setbacks of the past 900 years of history and plan conquest as inevitable. Nowhere have Muslims hesitated to deface and destroy the artifacts of other religions: they have routinely converted cathedrals to mosques, destroyed Buddhist shrines and statutes -- those tolerant Taliban destroyed the huge Buddhas of Bamyan in 2001. And nowhere in Islam are any other religions and their places of worship tolerated. And nor have they ever been, except to extort an infidel tax.
Christians cannot even set foot in Mecca. Owning a bible will get you shot in Afghanistan. Probably have you arrested in Saudi Arabia if you are not a passport carrying foreigner. Could get you stoned or beheaded in Iran. Lots of different Islamic sects represented in that list, with a one unifying trait: brutal punishment of those who are not Muslim.
Whether OBAMA knows it or not, this nation was founded by Christians and came to prosperity under Christian-oriented faith. The people behind the "Cordoba Mosque"come from the same group that would have you killed for "insulting the Prophet." But somehow an attack that kills 3000 Americans is ... cause to build a mosque. "To study peace."
